Exhibition architecture system
Douglas-fir, poplar plywood, metal
Max is an exhibition architecture in kit form, commissioned by the Ministère de la Culture and the Beaux-Arts de Paris. Unlike an ephemeral, disposable scenography, this is a system, that means a construction that can be modulated, adapted, dismantled and deployed, with a requirement for durability over several years. I worked with a group of students to draw up the outline. I owe them a large part of the ideas that led to this result: the use of natural materials that have been minimally transformed, the creation of a neutral floor that also serves as a technical floor, dimensions on the scale of an artist’s studio rather than on a monumental scale, and so on. It was completely unexpected for me to see this project borrow from a Japanese aesthetic (and more specifically from that of nō or sarugaku theater). But the best surprise is always to see how the artists take hold of this space.
